Development of Infrastructure on Krievu Island for the Transfer of Port Activities from the City Centre

Customer: Freeport of Riga Authority

Latvia
Start date: April 2012
Finish date: November 2015

The main purpose of the project is to transfer the Riga port general cargo, Ro-Ro and bulk cargo terminal activities from Andrejosta and Eksportosta districts to island Krievu. As a result, the city center would be freed from the cargo reloading operations, which inevitably cause irreversible damage to environment.

Within the framework of the project, it is planned to carry out: drifting of the site; construction of berths with a total length of 1496.25 m; expansion and deepening of the waterway; modernization of railway and road infrastructure; installation of the main engineering networks -  water supply, electricity, sewerage, low voltage, gas and fire protection networks.

At this moment, a vast majority of Riga Freeport activities are in a close proximity of Riga old city centre – in districts of Andrejosta and Eksportosta, on the left side of the River Daugava. Implementation of the project would drastically reduce air and noise pollution, which are caused by cargo reloading in areas of Eksportosta and Andrejosta. Furthermore, by transferring the port activities, its competitiveness is about to significantly boost.
